Initial Series 1854 - 1861
Overview
The first Bank of Chattanooga type notes issued were $1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 20, 50 and
100 denominations. The first president, William Williams, as well as the
second president, John Overton,
signed
the initial note types. Danfoth, Wright,
& Co. of Philadelphia & N.Y printed the notes.
$1, $2 and $3 Notes
The $1, 2 and 3 notes must have been issued in very limited numbers, or
they were recalled. They were issued in limited numbers or recalled because
the notes were being raised or because the City of Chattanooga was issuing
small interest bearing notes at that time. No $2 issued notes are
known to exist. Only one $1 in poor condition is known to exist.
The $1 and $2 designs are known because two existing proof
sheets from the American Banknote Archives were released recently. The
$3 note is rare; only two issued notes known to exist.

For the first 11 years I searched for the initial $5 without the overprint with the blue stamp "REDEEMABLE
AT BANK OF MEMPHIS" listed in Paul Garland's book as(G-90), but I never found one. However, in April of 2007
the son of a collector sold a hoard of Tennessee obsolete notes that had two damaged VG G-90 notes. I purchased
the one with clear a clear stamp, signatures, date and serial number shown.

The unique $5 G-89 note that has been raised (changed) to a $50 note
is listed as G-113. Note the excellent hand work removed the two 5s and
the design around them and replaced them with 50s. This fraud was accepted
because there were so many different notes circulating that no one noticed
it was the wrong design for a $50 from the Bank of Chattanooga.
